The Ukraine Crisis and You Plus One Crucial Step

Ukraine

This past week has been traumatic for the world as we watched Russia invade Ukraine. I don’t know about you, but it has been heart-wrenching. Perhaps like many, you may be feeling helpless and not know what to do.

While there are many places to send money, I also believe that taking a good look at how we live our lives is crucial.

Someone once asked me how I coped with a school shooting that happened in the United States. I replied, "first I had to take a look at how I may be contributing unknowingly to violence". I do believe that looking at ourselves and how we may unknowingly contribute to violence is so important.

Many might respond that they are not violent ever. But violence can be subtle. Screaming at a car on the highway, telling yourself you look fat, ugly, or dumb, flipping someone off, judging someone’s weight, race, age, hair, or religion can all be subtle forms of violence that can cumulate into something bigger… yes, like war.  Even the subtle criticisms we berate ourselves with can create an inner turmoil that can spill out to our own hearts as well as to others.

If you will, take a moment and reflect on how you might unknowingly be adding a little fire to violence. We need to be aware from the subtle to the obvious where the hate, judgment, and anger are towards ourselves and others.

How then can you contribute to bringing the light and love to your own heart and to others? We have to begin with ourselves so that it ripples out to the world.
