The Molting Season —When Life Asks You to Shed Who You Used to Be

Oxygen for Women Podcast

with Perry Janssen

You are not falling apart.
You are shedding what no longer fits.

In this episode, Perry introduces the concept of the “molting season” — a deeply transformative period where life begins to outgrow the identities, roles, and expectations you once lived by. This is not a breakdown. It is a natural process of renewal, even if it feels confusing or uncomfortable while you are in it.

If you’ve ever felt like your life no longer fits the way it used to…
If you’ve ever questioned who you are or what comes next…
If you’ve ever felt caught between the person you were and the person you are becoming…

This conversation is for you.

What the Molting Season Really Is

In the natural world, molting is a process of shedding.

Birds lose feathers.
Snakes shed their skin.
Animals release what has become too tight for their growth.

The old layer that once protected them eventually becomes restrictive.

So it must be released.

Humans go through this too.

Not physically, but emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually.

A molting season is when the life you’ve been living begins to feel too small for who you are becoming.

Not because you did anything wrong.

But because you have outgrown it.

The Threshold Between Who You Were and
Who You Are Becoming

Molting is not a clean or predictable process.

It is a threshold.

A space between identities.
A space between chapters of your life.

The old version of you is loosening.
But the new version has not fully formed yet.

This is why it can feel:

- Uncertain
- Disorienting
- Emotional
- Unstable

You may feel like you don’t recognize yourself anymore.

Or like what used to motivate you no longer does.

This is not confusion without meaning.

It is transformation in progress.

Why This Season Can Feel So Difficult

Many women experience this phase without language for it.

So instead of recognizing it as growth, they label it as:

- Burnout
- Depression
- Midlife crisis
- Emotional exhaustion
- Identity loss

But something deeper is happening.

You are not just letting go of behaviors.

You are letting go of identities.

The helper.
The responsible one.
The one who holds everything together.

These roles may have defined you for years.

And even if they once worked, something inside you may now be saying:

I can’t keep living this way.

The Identity Shift Beneath the Surface

Many women have built their sense of worth around being:

- Reliable
- Capable
- Selfless
- Emotionally attuned to others

These identities are powerful.

And when they begin to shift, it can feel unsettling.

You may think:

I don’t know who I am anymore.
What used to matter doesn’t feel the same.
Something is changing, but I don’t understand it yet.

This is not a loss of self.

It is a redefinition of self.

The Pressure to Keep Functioning

One of the reasons molting is so difficult is the cultural expectation to keep going.

To stay productive.
To appear fine.
To hold everything together.

Even when something inside you is asking for rest.

Instead of honoring the process, many women:

- Push harder
- Suppress their emotions
- Try to “fix” themselves
- Return to old patterns

But molting is not asking you to go back.

It is asking you to grow forward.

Molting Is Not a Breakdown

It can feel like everything is unraveling.

But this is not a failure.

It is a reorganization of your life around deeper truth.

Something inside you is making space.

For a life that is more aligned.
More honest.
More fully yours.

What feels like a breakdown is often the beginning of a breakthrough.

The Mistake of Trying to Fix It Too Quickly

One of the biggest challenges during this season is the urge to solve it.

To rush clarity.
To force direction.
To make the discomfort go away.

But molting is not a problem to fix.

It is a process to move through.

Growth takes time.

Just like in nature, transformation cannot be rushed.

The First Step: Awareness

Instead of pushing through, Perry invites a different approach.

Awareness.

Slowing down enough to notice what is happening inside you.

You might begin by asking:

What feels too heavy right now?
What no longer fits?
What is trying to change?

This is not about having answers.

It is about listening.

Compassion and Curiosity in the Process
Many women respond to this season with self-criticism.

They judge themselves for feeling lost or uncertain.

But this is where compassion becomes essential.

To recognize:

Of course this is hard.
Something important is shifting.

From there, curiosity can emerge.

Instead of resisting the experience, you can begin to ask:

What is this trying to show me?
What might be growing beneath this discomfort?

Listening Through the Body

Transformation is not only mental.

The body carries information too.

You may notice:

Tension around certain roles or relationships
Fatigue from years of overgiving
A sense of expansion when imagining something new

The body often knows what the mind is still trying to figure out.

And when you begin to listen, a deeper wisdom becomes available.

The Middle Space of Not Knowing

One of the most challenging parts of molting is the in-between.

The space where:

The old is falling away
The new is not yet clear

This is where patience becomes essential.

And where self-kindness matters most.

Because transformation does not happen all at once.

The caterpillar dissolves before becoming a butterfly.

Nature does not rush this process.

And neither should you.

What Emerges on the Other Side

Over time, something begins to shift.

Women often rediscover parts of themselves that were buried.

Their voice becomes clearer.
Their desires become more defined.
Their life begins to feel more aligned.

They start asking:

What do I actually want now?
What matters to me now?
How do I want to live this next chapter?

And the answers begin to form from a deeper place.

A Gentle Invitation

If you are in a molting season, hear this clearly:

You are not broken.
You are not lost.

You are in a process of becoming.

Even if it feels uncertain.
Even if it feels uncomfortable.

Something inside you is reorganizing your life around truth.

Inside Oxygen for Women, Perry guides women through these seasons of transformation.

Together they begin to:

Understand what is shifting
Reconnect with themselves
Release outdated roles and identities
Create space for a more aligned life

Because you are not meant to stay who you used to be.

You are meant to grow into who you are becoming.
